Face à la tragédie qui se déroule à Port-au-Prince, la violence des gangs a atteint un point critique, poussant plusieurs compagnies aériennes à annuler leurs vols vers la capitale haïtienne. Une source au sein de l’Office National de l’Aviation Civile (OFNAC) a confirmé cette triste nouvelle, relayée par la radio Télé Métro. Cette décision, lourde de conséquences, restera en vigueur jusqu’à nouvel ordre, nous a-t-on confié.
Spirit Airlines, la première à réagir, a suspendu ses liaisons avec Haïti. Dans un acte de désespoir, un de ses avions a dû se poser en urgence en République Dominicaine, fuyant la menace des tirs qui résonnaient près de l’aéroport international Toussaint Louverture. Un incident notable a eu lieu lorsque l’avion de Spirit Airlines a dû effectuer un atterrissage d’urgence à l’aéroport international du Cibao, à Santiago de los Caballeros, en République dominicaine. Cette situation a été causée par des tirs subis lors de l’approche de l’appareil en Haïti.
Le président Abinader a rapporté que, mis à part un membre de l’équipage souffrant d’une légère blessure, aucun des passagers n’a été blessé. Ils ont bénéficié de l’intervention des équipes médicales présentes sur le site.
Abinader a qualifié cet événement d’acte de terrorisme, soulignant une problématique plus large : l’absence de classification de ces gangs comme groupes terroristes par les nations qui surveillent et soutiennent Haïti. Il a déclaré que de tels groupes ciblent des avions transportant des innocents, qu’ils soient haïtiens, américains ou de toute autre nationalité, venant simplement rendre visite à leurs familles. Pour Abinader, la non-reconnaissance de ces gangs en tant que terroristes pose un problème éthique et stratégique. Il a insisté sur le fait que ces organisations doivent être reconnues pour ce qu’elles sont et que, s’ils s’aventurent à commettre de tels actes, ils doivent s’attendre à des répercussions.
