Un nouvel élan vers la liberté : Ridha Ben Saleh Al-Yazidi, un détenu tunisien de 59 ans, vient de retrouver sa terre natale après avoir passé plus de deux décennies derrière les barreaux de la prison de Guantanamo. Incarcéré depuis l’ouverture de cette prison controversée le 11 janvier 2002, Al-Yazidi avait été accusé d’appartenir à Al-Qaïda, sans toutefois faire l’objet de poursuites judiciaires.
La décision de son transfert, soutenue par le secrétaire à la Défense, Lloyd Austin, marque une étape significative dans l’effort des États-Unis pour réduire la population carcérale de Guantanamo. Pour l’heure, 26 détenus demeurent dans cette prison, dont 14 sont jugés aptes à être transférés.
Guantanamo, située sur une base navale américaine à Cuba, reste au centre d’un débat intense, critiquée pour ses détentions indéfinies et ses méthodes d’interrogatoire souvent qualifiées d’inhumaines. Les défenseurs des droits humains continuent de dénoncer ces pratiques et réclament la fermeture définitive de cette prison emblématique.
